Engine repairs are our main forte at XL Mechanical Service Ltd. but recently we took on a special diesel engine rebuilt project, and wanted to share it with everyone. Here are some pictures of the engine we rebuilt and assembled. It is a 1300 horse power sled pulling (tractor pulling / power pulling) engine. The engine is originally out of a 1996 Dodge truck. This motor has been heavily modified for this specialized application.
The engine runs no coolant as the block and head are filled with concrete for added strength. The engine rotating assembly is balanced and blue printed. The head has its intake casting shaved off, and uses a custom 6 runner side draft intake manifold. On the inside the head and block are fire ringed, fly cut pistons and a Hamilton 230/240 cam round out the internals. On the bottom end the crankshaft has been studded and uses a 3/4 “ girdle.
The Fuel system utilizes a heavily modified Sheid Diesel 13mm race pump with adjustable timing gear and Scheid 5X25 injectors, as well as a S500 turbo to keep things cool. The engine will run safely for the approximate minute or so that the pull lasts on the 330 foot long track without coolant in it due to all the mass to absorb the heat.
This is an entry level engine at 1300 h.p. for diesel class. The cost to build is significant. These engines range in price from $30,000 to $100,000 or more. If you have a special Dodge Diesel rebuild project you would like us to give you a quote on please call 403-350-6840.
